Lawerta - World At Your Feet illustrator

Our football picture book World At Your Feet is illustrated by the hugely talented Jorge Lawerta.

Lawerta is a Spanish illustrator who is based in his hometown of Valencia. He was born in 1983.

After studying fine arts at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, he moved into a career in graphic design and art direction. But after working for agencies such as CulDesac, in Valencia, and GlobalWorks, in New York City, Lawerta grew frustrated with agency life. He points to corporate hierarchies, not being able to make creative decisions, and having to defend decisions which he disagreed as factors that convinced him that life as a jobbing graphic designer was not for him.

He decided to focus instead on his passion for illustration. He has been drawing professionally since 2011 but has been doodling all his life. Indeed, his childhood ambition was to become a cartoonist for Disney.

In addition to his love of illustration, Lawerta is also a big football, which has been a recurring theme throughout his work. His chance to combine two of his passions professionally came when he was asked to undertake some work for sport broadcaster ESPN.

Shortly, afterwards he was commissioned to do work for Valencia-based La Liga side Levante, including creating the typography for their kit.

Football has been a mainstay of the Lawerta portfolio ever since, including in his most recent project: the illustrations for World At Your Feet. Lawerta has created a front cover, an illustrated pattern for the inside covers and 16 stunning illustrated double-page spreads for the book.
